Sharapova, Roddick Upset At Wimbledon
Posted by Sally on June 26, 2008
Former champion Maria Sharapova came unstuck against an inspired Alla Kudryatseva in the second round of Wimbledon today. The world number three struggled against her Russian compatriot, making a host of errors from the baseline. Kudryatseva is ranked outside of the top 150, and is probably best known for giving eventual champion Venus Williams a big scare in an early round last year. Williams had to overcome a challenge from British number one, Anne Keothavong, in the first set of her second round match before coming through 7-5 6-2.
Andy Roddick was another seeded player who bowed out in the second round today, after losing a tight four-set match to Janko Tipsarevic.
Today’s winners included Rafael Nadal (who needed four sets to see off rising star Ernests Gulbis), Andy Murray, Jelena Jankovic, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Richard Gasquet, Elena Dementieva and Sania Mirza.
