Surbiton Challenger: Day 3

British number one Anne Keothavong finally finished off her match against fellow Brit Amanda Elliott. The match started on Monday, but it was today that Keothavong was able to post a 4-6 6-2 6-0 win over her opponent. There were also British wins for Alex Bogdanovic (a 6-4 6-3 winner over second seeded Mischa Zverev), Josh Goodall (a 6-4 6-1 winner over American Brendan Evans), Melanie South (who battled from a set down to defeat compatriot Naomi Broady), Katie O’Brien (who beat American Vania King from a set down), Elena Baltacha (who beat Andrea Klepac from a set down) and Georgie Stoop (who won a tight match against Anna Fitzpatrick).
Top seed Marcos Baghdatis (pictured) had a comfortable 6-4 6-4 win against Austrian lucky loser Martin Fischer, while third seed Arnaud Clement was a 6-4 7-5 winner over Russia’s Andrei Golubev. Eighth seed Edouard Roger-Vasselin took out Russia’s Pavel Chekhov 6-3 7-6.
There were also wins for Australia’s Roberts Smeets (who was a 4-6 7-6 7-6 winner over Chile’s Paul Capdeville), Israeli Harel Levy (who beat Sergei Stakhovsky 6-4 6-4), Alex Kunzetsov (a three-set winner over Ryan Sweeting), Gary Lugassy (a three-set winner over Aisam Qureshi) and Adrian Mannarino (a straight sets winner over Russian Mikhail Kukushin). Stephane Bohli moved on when 4th seed Kei Nishikori retired whilst trailing 5-1 in the opening set. Qualifier Frank Dancevic was leading 7th seed Gilles Muller by a set when the latter retired. 5th seed Kevin Anderson beat qualifier Neil Bamford in straight sets.
For the women, Melinda Czink, Rita Fujiwara, Abigail Spears, Yanina Wickmayer and Monique Adamczak were winners on day three. Qualifier Carly Gullickson beat defending champion Brenda Schultz-McCarthy in straight sets.
