Roger Federer booked his place in the quarters with a 6-4 7-5 7-5 win over Frenchman Julien Benneteau. The scoreline was tighter than might have been expected, but at this stage in the tournament, Federer will be relived to escape in straight sets. Rain halted play after Federer had taken a two sets to love lead, but the world number one appeared to deal with the interruption without too many problems.
Federer will now play Fernando Gonzalez (pictured), who ended the run of American Robby Ginepri with a 7-6 (4) 6-3 6-1 victory.
Ivan Ljubicic and France’s Gael Monfils play their fourth round clash today.
There was a big surprise in the men’s doubles as the top-seeded Bryan brothers were beated in three sets by unseeded Pablo Cuevas and Luis Horna. The seeds have been dropping like flies, but the Bryans usually get to the very end of Grand Slam tournaments, even on clay.
